Saints do not only act as mentors and examples of faith for Catholics, they are also known to give spiritual protection. They guard and shield them from all forms of spiritual and physical wickedness on earth. Catholics pray and call upon them for protection and guidance. These holy individuals dedicated their lives to God and humanity, the lived an uprightly before God till their very last breath. So in this article article we will be talking about Catholic Saints to pray for Protection and Guidance.

Catholics honor these saints and  look unto them as mentors, they try to follow in their footsteps and walk in their order of faith. Many Christians find comfort and encouragement knowing that some of these saints shared same struggle, pain, affliction and persecution as them in this present time, and it also interest these Christians to know that these saints who faced same challenges with them also prayed to the previous saints, seeking for strength, courage and spiritual guide, during their own hard time. This knowledge gives them this feeling to know they that they are not alone in their Christian journey.

Some saints are patrons of some situation and occupations, and Catholics beseech these saints to help them in those situations. For example, Saint Jude, who was among the Twelve disciples of Jesus, is the Patron saint of Hope and Impossible causes. 1. Saint Raymond Nonnatus (Sant Ramon Nonat)

Saint of Protection During Childbirth

Saint Raymond Nonnatus is a Saint from Catalonia in Spain. He was named at his Baptism and the meaning of his nickname Nonatus in Latin means, not born. He wasn’t born through the normal means, he was born through the Cesarean section and his mother died during the time of his birth. Saint Raymond Nonnatus is considered as the saint of pregnancy, childbirth and midwives.

Saint Raymond Nonnatus is seen by many as a miracle child because he was born through what is considered a medical miracle. According to the stories written about him, he was taken out from his dead mother’s womb alive through cutting his mother’s skin (Cesarean operation) as his mother had died while bringing him into the world.

Saint Raymond Nonnatus was canonized on 13th August 1669, by pope Clement IX in Roman Catholic church and he  died at the age of 36 in the year 31 August 1240. Hence his feast is usually celebrated on the 31st of August every year.

Today, all Catholic pregnant women pray to him, seeking for help, strength and protection during the period of their pregnancy and childbirth.

2. Saint Francis of Assisi

Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, known as Francis Assisi founded the religious order of the Franciscans. He was an Italian mystic, poet and Catholic friar. When he was alive, he lived a Christian life of poverty, he was known to be a beggar and a travelling preacher, who traveled to several places within a short period of time to preach the gospel of redemption to the people.

Saint Francis Assisi was born into an Italian home in the year 1181. He passed away at the age of 44 on 3rd October 1226. And he was canonized by Pope Gregory IX on the 16th of July 1228. His feast is being celebrated on the 4th of October every year.

Catholics pray to Saint Francis Assisi for protection for their animals, because Saint Francis had great love for animals and nature, stories written about him said that he was seen severally preaching to animals. A significant story of him in the city of Gubbio, where he lived for sometime. In that city, there dwelled a terrifying wolf that devoured human beings and other animals for food. Saint Francis went up to the hill and when he saw the wolf, he made the mark of the cross and beckoned on the wolf to come to him and cause no one harm. The wolf obeyed and came to him, and Saint Francis walked the wolf to into the city and asked the people to feed the wolf, the people were marveled. He loved and cared for nature because he believed that the nature is a mirror of God. Today he is seen by Catholics as a Patron Saint of Ecology.

Saint Francis of Assisi, lover of all creation,

patron saint of animals and the environment,

you abandoned a life of luxury for a life devoted to Christianity.

3. Saint Michael the Archangel

Saint of Protection from Evil

Factually, Saint Michael is not a Saint but an Archangel in heaven. He is a warrior angel, fighting battles and defeating the devil. During the fight in heaven, the Bible recorded that Archangel Michael fought mightily with the other powerful warrior angels in heaven to dethrone Satan. Archangel Michael is explicitly mentioned in the book of Revelation.

Archangel Michael is often represented in pictures as a warrior armed with helmet, sword, and shield and always in motion. He is regarded as a great captain and the leader of the heavenly hosts, and a warrior helping the the children of Israelites. And in the early Christian Church, he was regarded as the defender and helper of the church enemies. Today, when we are faced with spiritual battles, we call upon Archangel Michael to help us fight against our enemies and defeat them. We also ask him for protection against the devices of the enemies. Here are some of the prayers rendered to Archangel Michael;

4. Saint Joseph the Worker

Saint of Protection for Family

Saint Joseph popularly known as the earthly father of our Lord Jesus and the husband of our Mary. Joseph was an offspring of King David. Joseph was engaged to be married to a certain virgin, Mary. But he found out that Mary was with a child in her womb, he felt bad having known that he wasn’t the responsible for the pregnancy, the he decided to quietly leave Mary, but an angel intervened and told him that the child Mary was carrying is conceived by the Holy Spirit and he is going to be a Messiah to save the people. He obeyed the angel and took Mary as wife, he protected Mary and the Child from King Herod who was set out to kill all new born, because he heard that another King was born.

However, Joseph wasn’t mentioned so much in the scripture, he last appeared  in the Bible when him and Mary went in search of Jesus. He is considered as a Patron Saint of protection and provider for the family, because of the way he protected and provided for Mary and Jesus.

Oh, Saint Joseph,

foster father of Jesus,

protector of the Holy Family,

I implore your holy intercession.

Guard my family from all harm and danger,

provide for us in our temporal needs,

comfort us in times of distress

and grant us the grace to persevere in love and faith till the end.

5. Saint George

Patron Saint of Soldiers

Saint George was an early Christian who is respected as a Saint in Christianity. According to tradition, he was a soldier in the Roman army, then he became a member of the Praetorian Guard or Roman emperor Diocletian. Saint George was killed because of his refusal to denounce Christianity. After his death, he became one of the most venerated Saint in Christianity, and especially as military Saint because of his unwavering faith in God, even in the face of death. Today, he has become a powerful character for soldiers and those facing persecutions because of Christianity.

Saint George was born in the Third Century, died 3rd of April 303 and was venerated in the Orthodox Church Roman Catholic Church. His feast is celebrated by Catholics on the 23rd of April every year. Saint George is represented in pictures as a warrior clothed in plate armour with a sword in hand, riding on white horse and often slaying a dragon.

Saint George, brave and noble patron saint of soldiers,

we ask for your protection and guidance.

Grant us the courage to face our fears,

the strength to carry on in adversity,

and the wisdom to understand that true victory lies not in power

but in love and compassion.

6. Saint Jude Thaddeus

According to the New Testament Bible, Saint Jude was among the twelve disciples of Jesus when he was on earth. To avoid identification with Judas Iscariot, Saint Jude is distinguished in the book of John 12:22. Saint Jude is regarded as the Patron of hope, he preached the gospel of good news to people with great love and devotion and often in the midst of difficult situations. 7. Saint Sebastian

Protection Against Plagues And Epidemics

Saint Sebastian was an early Christian. According to history, he was persecuted and killed during the Diocletianic persecution of Christian. During his persecution, he was tied to a tree and shot with arrows, but those shots didn’t kill which he was later rescued and healed by Irene of Rome a Christian widow. When he became strong, he went to the Roman emperor that persecuted Christians and warned him about sins.

Saint Sebastian served as a defense against the bubonic plague and his recovery from the arrow wounds gave hope to people who are faced with health challenges and inflicted with epidemics. He is also a Saint of athletes.
