The desire to get the finest things of this life is not a bad desire, because we need these things for our comfort, peace, sanity and easy going life and it is also the reason we toil hard to make a living. But what becomes an issue is having very high quest for these material things and wanting to have more than we can afford, and going to any length to get these things. When these desires becomes too much to handle, it can make our lives complicated and can make us loose our sense of contentment. However, as Christ followers, we are have been made to understand through the Bible and through Christ’s life that our happiness and fulfillment should not come from physical things but from the word of God which will help us to live a Christ ordained kind of life here on earth. In a world where materialism is king, it is very easy for us to get caught up with strong desires for fulfillment through material things. What Does The Bible Say About Materialism?

The Bible does not condemn wealth, possession and comforts, but only forewarns us about letting our desires for these material things be in control of our lives. Emphasizing that our focus and gaze should be on things that are above and gainful to our spiritual lives.

Let us see the book of Matthew 6:19-21 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where treasure is, there your heart will be also. This passage of the Bible emphasizes on not making physical and earthly possessions our focus, but rather we should focus on heavenly gains.

Ecclesiastes 5:10 “Whoever loves money never has enough, whoever loves wealth, is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless.” This Bible verses teaches on the emptiness and incompleteness that comes when we only chase earthly possessions.

Hebrew 13:5 “Keep you life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, I will never you nor forsake you.” This Bible verse encourages us to totally depend on God and to be  content with what we have and stay clear from whatsoever that increases our love for money and material things.
