The Life of St. Anthony of Padua
St. Anthony of Padua was born 1195 in Losbon, Portugal by Martin Vincente de Bulhao and Teresa Pais Taveira who where very wealthy then. They wanted him to become a noble, but St. Anthony had other plans for himself. He is often portrayed while carrying a baby Jesus his arm. Sometimes with Book, a lily, or all three.
As a young boy, he went against the wishes of his parents and joined the Augustinian Abbey of St. Vincent on the outskirts of Lisbon. There he built himself as a scholar who loves to study so much, but this didn’t last long. His friends and family would often visit him with expensive gifts and messages from the outside world. These were disturbing for him and his studies, thus, making him tender a request for transfer to Augustinian Santa Cruz Monastery (Monastery of the Holy Cross) in Coimbra, which was the capital of Portugal as of then.
Later he joined Franciscan where he hoped to continue his teachings, and preaching. But this was cut short due to his poor health after he was diagnosed with dropsy, making to end up teaching theology in Bologna and Southern France. Each time he preaches, hundreds and even thousands will gather to listen. His writings were translated into many languages and have become some of the greatest literary works in the Catholic church. He later died on 12 June 1231 at the Poor Clare convent at Arcella on his way back to Padua. Thus, the reason for the name St. Anthony of Padua, and was also named the patron saint of lost things and articles.
