Sickness and death are the two inevitable realities of human. Although sickness and death were not part of God’s original  plans for humanity. Before the fall of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, humans were meant to live in perfect health and harmony with God. There was no sickness, nor suffering nor death, their disobedience brought sickness and death. However, during the early teachings of Jesus and the Apostles, the scripture expressly speaks about human’s death and suffering on earth. These experiences, even though weren’t part of God’s plans for human, they are not meaningless in our Christian life and journey. Sickness and death are part of God’s redemptive plans for humanity.

God is not distant in sickness and death, in fact he invites us to come to him with all that. He promise to be our healer and he will conquer death on our behalf. This does not mean that he delights in our suffering, it only shows his sovereignty over all situations and that nothing happens without his consent. The story of Job is a perfect example of God’s consent and sovereignty over sickness and death. Job; a righteousness man suffers immensely from sickness, to various losses, including the death of all his family members. His suffering was not as a result of sin or as a form of punishment from God. His suffering was permitted by God to serve as part of his divine purpose to reveal his power, sovereignty, mercy and second chance. Jesus himself suffered and died, his suffering and death was to bore sickness and death so that all those who believe in him will be healed and also experience the power of his resurrection.

The scripture made us t0o understand that death is not end for Christians, it is a path that leads to eternal life with God himself. This does not discredits the grief that comes with loosing a loved one, it just gives believers an insight on how to handle sickness and death. As believers, we ought to mourn our loved ones with hope to see them again on the resurrection morning. When next we loose a loved one, or we find ourselves in the shackles of sickness, let us remember that God has conquered sickness and death on our behalf.

What Does The Bible Say About Sickness And Death? 

The Bible recognizes sickness and death as part of painful human realities, but for a believers, it is not meaningless. Sickness and death direct us to our need for a savior and healer. Sickness and death gives us an avenue to draw closer to the person who conquered sickness and the power of grave for our sake. In Christ, we receive healing when we are sick and we find hope, joy and the promise of eternal life when death visits us.

Matthew 9:35 “Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction.” Jesus demonstrates his love and compassion for those bound by sickness and pain. This verse reveals that the coming of Jesus to earth and his sacrifice on the cross of Calvary was to restore what sin took away from humanity and also conquer the power of death.

Matthew 5:4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” This scripture teaches us that God is aware of mourning, and he will comfort us. He encourages us to trust him in our suffering.

Matthew 11:28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest”. God beckons us to come to him in our sufferings and pains, In him, there is rest, peace and joy.

Gracious God in heaven, our comforter and healer in times of pain.

Right now, we lift up all those mourning, whose hearts are heavy with loss and grief.

Lord, we ask that you be near to them, wrap them around in your love, give them the fortitude to bear their loss.
